Pre-nuptial agreement: Couples who marry later in life and have established sizable property and assets may consider this an option to protect their children from a prior marriage. Often, pre-nuptials are also used to protect inheritances.

Post-nuptial agreement: Often an option after a problem arises in a marriage, post-nuptials, like pre-nuptials, apply to property, assets, and sometimes alimony. Issues involving children, such as child support and child custody, are not covered.
