Temporary Visas

A temporary visa is a great way for a nonimmigrant to come to the U.S. temporarily to receive an education, to conduct limited business or to simply experience all that America has to offer.  There are various visas by which a foreign national may enter the U.S. temporarily.  A few of the more common types of temporary visas include:

B1/B2 Visa for Tourists and Business Visitors

There are two categories of B visas available to nonimmigrant visitors who intend to stay in the U.S. for a short duration.  The first, known as the B-1 visa, is used by visitors who seek to come to the U.S. temporarily for business purposes.  The second, known as the B-2 visa is used by visitors seeking entry into the U.S. for pleasure.  In general, a B visa applicant must show that he or she has a foreign residence that he or she does not intend to abandon, that he or she intends to remain in the U.S. for a specified short period of time, that he or she intends to depart upon the completion of his or her visit, and that he or she is seeking admission to the U.S. for legitimate purposes.

F Visa for Students:

The F visa is used by foreign nationals who seek to enroll in academic programs in the U.S., even if such programs are available in their own country.  Foreign nationals at various levels of education may apply for an F visa.  In general, a foreign national seeking entry based upon an F visa must show:

  1. that he or she will be enrolling in a language training program, a vocational program or an academic educational program;
  2. that the school is one that is approved by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS);
  3. that enrollment is full-time;
  4. that he or she is proficient in the English language or will be enrolled in a program leading to English proficiency;
  5. that he or she has sufficient funds available to support himself or herself for the duration of the proposed course of study; and
  6. that he or she has a residence abroad that he or she does not intend to relinquish.

J-1 Exchange Visa

The J-1 visa is designed to promote cultural understanding between the U.S. and foreign nationals.  J-1 visa applicants must be sponsored by eligible entities approved by the U.S. Department of State, which typically include local, state and federal government agencies in the U.S., international agencies or organizations of which the U.S. is a member of and that have an office in the U.S. and other reputable organizations that are citizens of the U.S.  A foreign national who is a student, short-term scholar, trainee, teacher, professor, research scholar, specialist or other person of similar description may be eligible for a J-1 visa.
