The basic requirement for both programs is that the person has a medical inability to perform any gainful activity for a sustained period of time. Social Security Disability is divided into two programs: Social Security Disability Insurance and Supplementary Security Income. Both require that the person has the inability to perform a gainful activity for a sustained period of time. Social Security Disability Insurance is available for people who have worked and paid FICA taxes for ten years, and for five of the ten years before they became totally disabled.
A person is eligible if they have medical problems that prevent the person from working. They must provide medical documentation that proves they will be unable to work for 12 months, or that the medical problem will result in death. Filing a Claim SSDI claims can be filed online at www.ssa.gov. SSI claims or a claim for both SSI and SSDI must be filed at your local social security office, or you can call SSA at 1-800-772-1213.
