The brachial plexus is a bundle of nerves in the shoulder that controls movement in the shoulders, arms, hands, wrists, and fingers. During childbirth, these nerves can become damaged due to a birth complication known as shoulder dystocia. This condition is often a result of negligence on the part of medical professionals, and in many cases injuries affecting newborn children could have been prevented. Brachial Plexus Birth Injuries in Illinois

Brachial plexus injuries are the result of shoulder dystocia, and they affect thousands of newborns each year. The two most common types of brachial plexus birth injuries are:

  • Erb’s Palsy: Also referred to as brachial plexus palsy, Erb’s palsy is a condition that affects the upper plexus nerves that control the shoulders and arms. When nerves in the upper plexus are damaged during childbirth, it can lead to injuries such as stretches, ruptures, and avulsions of nerves. These injuries often result in partial or full paralysis in the shoulders and arms.
  • Klumpke’s Palsy: This condition affects the lower plexus nerves which control the forearms, wrists, hands, and fingers. Klumpke’s palsy is often the result of hyperextension of the arms during childbirth, which damages the lower plexus nerves and weakens or paralyzes the areas controlled by these nerves.

Brachial plexus injuries are often preventable if medical professionals recognize cases that pose a higher risk of shoulder dystocia and take appropriate action. Risk factors include expectant mothers with a history of difficult pregnancies, abnormal pelvic size/shape, gestational diabetes, excessive weight gain, and late delivery dates. Failure to properly respond to these issues may be considered medical malpractice, and in these cases, a family may receive compensation for damages that occurrec because of the negligence of medical personnel.

Symptoms of brachial plexus birth injuries are not always recognized immediately after birth. In some cases, parents do not become aware of this condition until several years later. This can make it challenging to determine the cause of the injury. At Mevorah & Giglio Law Offices, we can thoroughly review the medical records in birth injury cases to find out exactly what actions were taken (if any) to ensure a safe and healthy delivery. If you have a child that is suffering from Erb’s palsy, Klumpke’s palsy, or other birth injuries contact Mevorah & Giglio Law Offices today at 630-932-9100 for a free consultation with one of our experienced Illinois medical malpractice attorneys.
