Types of Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a general medical condition that manifests itself in several ways. The four main types of CP are:

  • Spastic: The majority of cases fall into this category. Spastic cerebral palsy is caused by a lesion in the brain that permanently damages the nerves, leading to impairments to neuromuscular mobility. This condition can affect nearly every area of the body, and symptoms include jerky, erratic movements and difficulty relaxing muscles.
  • Athetoid/Dyskinetic: Damage to the areas of the brain that control reflexes, coordination, and involuntary movements can cause muscles to become too tense or too loose. Symptoms of athetoid cerebral palsy include difficulty walking or holding yourself upright.
  • Ataxic: This condition occurs when there is damage to the cerebellum, leading to difficulty with muscle movements, balance, and coordination.
  • Mixed: Damage to different parts of the brain can lead to multiple impairments that vary in symptoms and severity.

What Causes Cerebral Palsy?

Cerebral palsy is usually a result of multiple factors that occur during pregnancy, labor, delivery, or shortly after birth. Some of the leading causes of cerebral palsy include:

  • Maternal or fetal infections (such as toxoplasmosis or rubella);
  • Excessive use of labor induction medications;
  • Deprivation of oxygen to the brain during pregnancy, labor, or childbirth;
  • Excessive use of a forceps or vacuum extractor during labor;
  • Untreated post-delivery brain infections;
  • Excessive exposure to brain-damaging toxins or chemicals; and
  • Other forms of severe head trauma.

Though cerebral palsy is non-progressive and does not get worse over time, it is a permanent condition from which there is no known cure. CP is managed by employing various therapies and using adaptive devices. Surgeries may also be necessary. The ongoing medical bills can put a major burden on the family of a child with cerebral palsy. This is why it is important to perform a thorough investigation to determine if a hospital, doctor, nurse, or other medical professional was at fault for birth injuries that led to cerebral palsy. If you have a child that has been diagnosed with cerebral palsy, contact Mevorah & Giglio Law Offices today at 630-932-9100 for a free consultation with one of our skilled birth injury attorneys.
