Cyclist Dies After Collision With Truck

A 23-year-old mother of three was killed while riding a bicycle on the Chicago's South Side after a collision with a truck, according to the chtribune. The driver of truck has not yet been criminally charged in the accident, even though she was, according to the Tribune, "cited for driving on a suspended license and for driving an unsafe vehicle." Caprice Cunningham's family said that "police have not been forthcoming about the accident." Cunningham was the second Chicago cyclist to be killed this month. On July 4, according to the Chicago Sun-Times, an 81-year-old cyclists was killed in an Edgebrook collision with a pick-up truck. According to data from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in "2010 618 pedalcyclists were killed and an additional 52,000 were injured in motor vehicle traffic crashes." These accounted for 2 percent of all motor vehicle traffic fatalities. Despite the risks, cycling has in the past decade become a more popular mode of transportation than ever. Large cities across the country have launched campaigns for cyclist awareness, and installed bike lanes in major thruways. The increased awareness of popularity of biking has not resulted in more crashes, even if more people are riding. According to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2001 there were 732 cyclist fatalities, a 15 percent decrease in total cyclist fatalities.
