Several Injured in Wrong-Way Crash

Posted on March 06, 2013 in Personal Injury

A 42-year-old woman is being questioned but has not been charged after causing an accident in mid-February that resulted in a 4-vehicle crash and several injuries, according to the chtribune. On a Friday night, at about 11:30p.m., the Chicago woman "was driving a 2007 Toyota Corolla southbound on the northbound lanes on the 3800 block of Lake Shore Drive near Waveland Avenue," Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli told the Tribune. The Corolla first struck a 2002 Volkswagen Jetta "driven by a 22-year-old-woman," and then continued on and struck a 2013 Volkswagen Jetta "being driven by a 46-year-old man." The man had a 43-year-old woman passenger in the car. The second Jetta had attempted to avoid the collision, and while doing so hit a 1997 Ford Contour, "which may have been parked on the side of the road," according to the Tribune. Police could not say exactly how long the woman had been driving the wrong way on Lake Shore Drive before causing the accident, and did not issue any citation for DUI or aggravated DUI. In fact, no charges at all have been issued. According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and an ABC News report, "nearly 400 people die each year from wrong-way driving." In late December of 2012, the NTSB "launched a national crackdown on wrong-way driving," accidents which Deborah Hersman, the chairman of the NTSB, says are completely preventable. Most wrong-way crashes involve older drivers, who are usually more than 70 years old. Yet "drunk drivers cause 60 percent of wrong-way crashes and nearly 10 percent of those accidents are done by repeat offenders," according to ABC News.
