DuPage County adoption attorneyAdopting a child is a great option for couples who would like children, but many people are surprised at how much it costs to actually adopt a child. The expenses can vary widely for many reasons, such as the number of legal fees, whether you are working with an agency or not, and the costs of obtaining all the necessary toys and childcare items. When the process is done, and you are finally able to go home with your child, it will all be worth it. However, you will likely want to try to alleviate the costs of adoption whenever possible.

Costs of Domestic and International Adoption

International adoption refers to adopting a child from another country instead of within the home country of the adoptive parents. Travel expenses and the laws and regulations around adoptions can all make it difficult to adopt a child from another country. International adoption also costs much more in general than a domestic adoption due to the different processes and fees involved. For example, most countries will require the prospective parent to visit the country of the child they wish to adopt, and the prices of multiple international flights can add up.

Domestic adoption is usually cheaper, but it still has many elements which will add to the total cost. Adopting through an adoption agency will increase the price as well, since adoption agencies will work with the parents to find a situation that is right for them, and they are usually involved in the process from start to finish. The agencies will also often offer counseling and support to the birth mother and adoptive parents.

DuPage County adoption attorneyAdopting a child can be a lengthy process, and for good reason. It is necessary for the proper due diligence to be taken by all parties to make sure the adoption is the right fit. It is helpful to do all the research you can before adopting a baby so you can be adequately prepared.

Fun Ways to Prepare

  • Get the baby’s bedroom ready - While you are waiting for the adoption process to be finalized, you can prepare the baby’s bedroom for them to arrive. Decorating the room with wallpaper, painting a mural, or buying toys, a crib, a changing table, a swing, and any other things necessary for your baby may take some time, so be sure to give yourself enough preparation time for your new arrival.
  • Exercise or take up a hobby - If you feel stressed or anxious while waiting for your baby, you can take your mind off things by exercising or starting a hobby you have always wanted to try.
  • Treat yourself and your spouse - Even though you are ready to have a child, you still need to remember your relationship and your own wellness. Once you have a child, more of your time will be devoted to them. Making the effort before you adopt the baby to spend time with your spouse and do things you both want to do will be beneficial to both of you.

Practical Steps

  • Find a pediatrician - Make sure you know where your chosen pediatrician is located. Do some research, get recommendations from friends and family, or ask at the adoption agency to find the doctor who will be the best fit for you.
  • Research daycare facilities - If you are looking to return to work after adoption, make sure you have an idea of the options for daycare in the area. It is never too early to start looking for a daycare that you like, because some daycares have waiting lists.
  • Attend a new parent and/or CPR class - It does not hurt to get as much information as possible about being a parent beforehand, so it may be beneficial to attend a new parent class. In addition, learning about CPR and basic first aid may prevent a disaster from occurring.

Illinois divorce lawyerAdoption is a familiar term that most people understand. However, guardianship is less known even though it is a popular alternative to adoption. In Illinois and other states, you can seek legal guardianship of a child who is under 18 years of age. Let’s take a closer look at how adoption and legal guardianship are similar and different.

Similarities

If you become the guardian of a minor child, you have the legal authority to act as the child’s part in every area of their life. You are now the one responsible for providing for them financially and making important decisions about their life. An adoption is similar in that it will also provide you with the authority a biological parent would have.

b2ap3_thumbnail_Untitled-design-3.jpgA guardian has the same responsibilities to a child as a child’s biological parent. An individual may obtain legal guardianship of a child in Illinois because a child’s biological parents cannot properly care for them, a child’s biological parents passed away in a tragic accident, a minor child is living with a disability, or senior adults do not have the ability to care for themselves.

Types of Guardianships

In Illinois, an individual can become a permanent legal guardian, a guardian ad litem, a standby guardian, or a short-term guardian. Let’s take a closer look at how each of these four types of guardianships are defined.

Illinois adoption lawyersAlthough the adoption laws in Illinois are geared primarily toward children, the state also allows for adult adoptions. Much like child adoption, it offers the benefit of a legally binding parent-child relationship, just as if the adult had been biologically born to the adopting person. How exactly does this process work, and why should you consider it for your family? The following explains.

Why Adopt an Adult?

Adult adoptions in Illinois rare, but they offer numerous benefits to both the adopting individual and adopted adult. Deemed the legal “child” of the adopting “parent,” the adopted adult becomes eligible for any inheritance that may be left behind once the adopting parent passes. Adoption also ensures the child has legal rights to make medical decisions for the adopting parent, should they ever become incapacitated or otherwise incapable of making such decisions themselves. In situations involving an adult child with disabilities, adoption can also give legal rights to an adopting parent, which they may need to secure benefits for the adult child.
